Love the crisp white clean look |
My dad was going to get rid of his old curio cabinet that had been sitting in the house for such a long time, but instead of trashing it, I took it off his hands and decided to freshen it up a bit for my own home.
Here's what it originally looking like:
|
The old '80s brown look with mirrors on the back |
To refinish this I took the doors off, took the glass windows off and taped up the back mirror which was not removable. I think sanded everything down and applied a coat of white primer

Dear me my garage is messy! |
After the primer dried I applied two coats of white spray paint. Make sure to keep a good distance when spraying so drips don't form. I also spray painted the hinges from brass to silver, the $3.99 for the can of paint was far easier than tracking down new hinges that would resemble the old odd shaped ones.
The only new things I bought besides the spray paint (3 cans for $3.99 each) and primer (2 cans for $3.99 each) were white clips to keep the glass in place ($3.19 for 2 packs) and new door handles ($12 for both). I tried refinishing the handles but they didn't turn out so hot, so went with these instead:
After putting everything back together I got it in my living room and am pretty pleased with the results.
Now to fill it up with memento's. I'm not really a knickknack type of person so it may take a while to fill it up, but for now this little guy will have to do

One might say I'm a rather odd duck most days |
The total project cost me roughly $40 and two weekends, but could have been done in one. Sorry for not more detailed pictures, once I got going I couldn't really stop!
what color spray paint did you use and where did you get door handles?
ReplyDeleteI got the door handles from Menards, pretty sure they still have them and sorry I don't have the spray paint anymore. Knowing me though, I probably got the whitest white they had, I normally use Valspar or Rustoleom. Two years later it's still holding up great!
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this article, and found it quite informative. And especially the part about the popularity of the cabinet handles. Thanks for sharing! I generally prefer cabinet handles to cabinet handles and would recommend it to all.
ReplyDeleteLove this I am going to do mine next week...
