Fish Scale Art for $8

Fish Scale art has been popping up for a while now and I think it's such a rich and interesting look.  I gave this trend a whirl and was pleased with the results (especially while only spending $8!)

Here's the supplies you'll need:

I only need to buy these two hence the small price of $8
A board (I used a 3/4" think board from Menards for $3.99, I had to have it cut down to the size I wanted, 22"x32")
Poster board (depends on your circle sizes, my were 3" in diameter, it took 4 pieces of poster board at $0.99 a piece)

Here's what I already had but you may need
Spray paint
Circle cutter or cup to trace around
Duck Tape
Staple Gun
Ruler
Pencil
Sawtooth Hanger for pictures
Step 1
Cut your circles from the poster board before you paint them.  You can either use a circle cutter or trace a circle object and cut out by hand.  I highly recommend a circle cutter

Step 2
Spray paint your circles.  Some people suggest spray painting after you've put these on your board, but I prefer before

*sorry I forgot to take pictures of this step*

Step 3
Draw lines on your board to help keep your circles in line

Step 4
After you have experimented with your circle placement (i would suggest taking a picture of your laid out idea to reference if needed) start laying out the circles starting at the bottom and staple them down.
I prefer to use a staple gun over gluing them down, it feels more secure and I was afraid the glue may soak threw and show.  When done stapling, trim the circles hanging of the edge.

Step 5
To frame it, I choose to use duck tape instead of wood.  You could certainly create a wood frame, but that was to much work for me.  So to get the matted look, I laid white duck tape around and then black as the "frame".  While you can see up close that it's duck tape, I've hung this piece in a place in my house people don't get too close to notice

I added extra pieces of tape on the back and
staple gunned all the edges to prevent peeling

Step 6
While this piece is big, it's very lightweight.  I used a simple sawtooth hanger

Step 7
Hang it up!
